Lake Okeechobee Survivor Series Now Accepting Registrations for April 12 Event

The second in the popular four race Lake Okeechobee Survivor Series scheduled for April 12, 2008 is open for registration at lakeOservisorseries.com.

Forty-four hardy participants showed up for the first of the four Lake Okeechobee Survivor Series Races which began at the Pahokee Marina on Sunday, January 20. The elements were so severe (thirty-five degree wind chill and gale force winds) two of the single participants and two of the teams did not finish the effort. The fastest racer took three hours and four minutes to finish. The conditions and challenges the racers faced resulted in the last team finishing in seven hours fifty-one minutes.

The second race will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Belle Glade Marina. This race will feature 3-5 miles of running, 7-10 miles of mountain biking, a paddling section, special challenges, and a thrilling, extra long zip line.  Racers need only to provide a mountain bike, helmet, compass, hydration pack, and map case.

As with these types of adventure race events, success is measured not so much by the speed of the racers, but by the challenges and return of participants to future events. The winner and solo racer, Ken Kanderfer, had this to say about the January race: “This first race was a real challenge. I’ll definitely be at this next one because they tell me each race in the series gets more challenging as they go along. I’m going to try to win all four.”

Race organizer Kenneth Lutz said of this second contest, “You never know what Mother Nature brings to the event. However, Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades are always formidable challengers that pit nature against race participants. We have designed the course to challenge, frustrate and tax the limits of the participants. Believe me, this will not be a walk in the park.”

Lutz was the course designer for the first Lake Okeechobee Survivor Series race as well as for the extremely popular “Escape from Torry Island” race held last year in conjunction with the Black Gold Jubilee Festival.

The participants in the April 12 adventure race will be finishing the course just as the 2008 Black Gold Jubilee Festival is kicking off. Great timing for those racers wanting to peruse the arts and crafts, food vendors, and entertainment that the festival provides. That is, if they have any energy left.

Participants may race solo or in teams of two or three. Teams may be coed if desired. There are trophies for all classifications as well as a special trophy and challenge for law enforcement and fire department teams.

Participants must register by Saturday, March 22, 2008 to be guaranteed an event t-shirt

The series is sponsored by the Lake Okeechobee Regional Economic (LORE) Alliance of Palm Beach County, Inc. and supported by a number of high profile sponsors including the Palm Beach Sports Commission and The Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The series of Adventure Races are part of LORE’s overall mission to bring attention to the Lake Okeechobee area and to improve the region’s economy and tourism trade. Pahokee, South Bay and Belle Glade will all host portions of the races throughout the series.
