The Board of County Commissioners serves as the legislative and policy-setting body for County government; enacts County wide laws and authorizes programs and all expenditures of County funds. They also act as the Child Care Facilities Board, the Solid Waste Authority, the Environmental Control Board, the Transportation Authority and the Zoning Authority. Seven commissioners are elected from single-member districts to staggered four-year terms to represent the entire County. The Board of County Commissioners meet regularly on the first and third Tuesday of each month for public hearings and regular Board items. During the first Tuesday meeting, at a specified time, citizens may address the Board on any issue under their jurisdiction. Workshops are usually held on the fourth Tuesday. All meetings are broadcast live over the Education/Government Channel 20.
