CODP Manager/Wrestling Administrator Leads Team Florida
as Head Coach at USA Wrestling National Cadet Duals,
Also Has Five Senior Wrestlers on the U.S. World Team

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Team Florida competed at the USA Wrestling National Cadet Dual Meet Championships held June 23-27 in Kansas City, Missouri at the KCI Expo Center. Shawn Sheldon, a Manager and Wrestling Administrator for the Palm Beach County Community Olympic Development Program (CODP), was head coach for Team Florida at the wrestling competitions.

This is the only national dual event for the cadet division, for wrestlers age 14 and 15. The states with teams participating this year included (alphabetically): California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Greco-Roman competition was held Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25. The freestyle competition was held on Sunday, June 26 and Monday, June 27. Teams competed in pools against a number of other squads. This was a tremendous experience for the athletes involved, who had a number of challenging dual meets. Many of the athletes who competed at the Cadet National Duals will also participate in the Cadet Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota July 23-29.

Shawn Sheldon also recently coached at the World Team Trials held in Ames, Iowa on June 18 and 19 in the Hilton Coliseum of Iowa State University and had five champions. They are now part of the U.S. World Team that will compete in the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest Hungary, September 27 through October 2, 2005. Sheldon coaches the New York Athletic Club (NYAC), which had the following five champions out of seven weight classes in Men’s Greco-Roman: Lindsey Durlacher (55kg/121 lbs.), Joe Warren (60 kg/132 lbs.), T.C. Dantzler (74 kg/163 lbs.), Brad Vering (84 kg/185 lbs.), and Justin Ruiz (96 kg/211.5 lbs.) The champions make up the U.S. World Team, only one wrestler per weight class is allowed to represent the United States at the World Championships.

Sheldon has previously helped coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a two-time Olympian, World Silver Medalist, nine-time U.S. National Champion, and has been involved in the Olympic movement since 1984.
