About the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame:
In 1977, after years of covering local sports, veteran sportswriter Chuck Otterson decided it was time to formerly recognize the accomplishments of area athletes. After months of meetings and planning the first Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet was held on May 7, 1977. Bob Balfe (Sports Editor), Jack Nicklaus (Golf) and Mayo Smith (Baseball) were the first to be inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame. Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame inductees are born in Palm Beach County and/or attended school in Palm Beach County and/or have achieved their major accomplishments while residing in Palm Beach County. Nominations are accepted from the general public. Each year seven individuals are selected for induction into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame and are recognized at the annual induction ceremony. All of the inductees honored are recognized as being role models for youth in Palm Beach County. They have also shown a strong dedication to their respective sports and have worked hard to reach this pinnacle of achievement.
The 2006 Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Inductees will be honored at the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Annual Sports Awards, scheduled for Sunday, May 7, 2006 at PGA National Resort and Spa. If you would like more information regarding the banquet, please contact Dusty Ann Williams at (561) 233-3122 or at dwilliams@palmbeachsports.com.
