Ever heard of quarter-midget race cars? Just ask Wellington resident Don Dufresne. As the new president of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, he's going to make sure everyone knows about this motor sport where kids race in pint-sized cars on a quarter-mile track.

Dufresne remembers racing quarter-midget cars as a hobby while growing up in Connecticut. When he learned there were four quarter-midget clubs in Palm Beach County, but no track for them to race on, he wanted to help.

One of his goals as president of the sports commission is to help in the rebuilding of the quarter-mile track at Moroso Motorsports Park just west of Jupiter.

"It's grass-roots racing," he said. "If the track is done well, we can start attracting regional and national events."

That is what the commission is all about: bringing nationally recognized sports events, such as the Honda Classic, Winter Equestrian Festival and Palm Beach Marathon, to Palm Beach County. Supported by bed-tax dollars, the commission's mission is to use sports to bring more people to Palm Beach County, boosting the economy and keeping the hotels in business.

In the next two years as president, Dufresne wants to expand the commission's Web site so that all sporting events in the county can be found easily by anyone in the world. This would include allowing junior and summer travel leagues to post their tournaments on the site.

"This is something that I think the sports commission can really be effective in providing - sports information to not only the local community, but the world at large," Dufresne said.

Dufresne, 48, also wants to maintain the commission's national Lou Groza Intercollegiate Place-Kicker Award and perform a top-to-bottom analysis of the commission's organizational system to make sure it is performing "as efficiently as we can be."

His passion and knowledge of motor sports and the equestrian community have come in handy since his appointment to the Sports Commission in 1999.

In fact, it was Dufresne's love for polo that first led him to Wellington, where he once boarded horses. But the physically demanding sport, which he played for 20 years, took its toll on him, so Dufresne now watches from the sidelines.

His intimate knowledge of the sporting community has come in handy in his job as a real estate attorney with the West Palm Beach firm Greenspoon Marder, where he specializes in equestrian transactions.

"It's a lot of fun to be able to take my avocation and mix it with my vocation," he said.

Dufresne also serves on the U.S. Polo Association Equine Welfare Committee and the Wellington Equestrian Committee. This year, he was elected to the board of trustees of the Business and Political Action Committee of Palm Beach County.

When Dufresne isn't working or volunteering, he spends time with his other love: a Harley Davidson Road Glide. He attends Bike Week in Daytona Beach and has ridden across the country on his custom motorcycle, including a trip to Trail Ridge Road in Colorado, which peaks at about 12,000 feet.

"To be up there on my motorcycle, it's pretty cool," he said. "That was a lot of fun."
