The top chess players in Florida are coming to Palm Beach County this weekend, May 15-17, for the annual Florida Invitational Super Stars Chess Tournament (State Scholastic All Stars Tournament). The event is being held at the Embassy Suites, on PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens, and believed to be the first time this event has been held in Palm Beach County.

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission won against 6 other nominees out of over 500 NASC members.

Almost four years ago the Kids Fitness Festival introduced a new team sport, Hanetball. Hanetball was developed right here in Palm Beach County by Fritz Valdeus, the sports’ inventor and current president of Hanetball, Inc. The sport combines many attributes from mainstream sports, such as soccer and basketball. It is the first sport of its kind to require opposing teams to score a goal by penetrating a 360 degree circular net.

The Sam Budnyk Scholar-Athlete Award Committee of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission is pleased to announce the 2009 Sam Budnyk Scholar-Athlete Award finalists. The Sam Budnyk Scholar-Athlete Award, established and first awarded in 2005, is presented annually to a high school senior from public or private school in Palm Beach County. The student must be nominated by the school’s Principal and Athletic Director and must have demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and community service.

AYSO Planning for 2010

Big Shots Palm Beach

Another Lou Groza Award winner is on his way to the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens signed Florida State’s Graham Gano, the 2008 recipient of the coveted award to a free agent contract following this weekend’s NFL draft. Gano will join past Groza winners such as Martin Gramatica, Sebastian Janikowski, Nate Kaeding, and Mike Nugent as NFL kickers.
