The Palm Beach County Sports Commission has granted four local high schools a total of $3,000 to their athletic departments from the 2008 Lou Groza program.
Annually, the national Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards program, which recognizes the top kicker in college football, also recognizes the outstanding achievements of local high school football players.
Sports Commission President, Patty Dent (Bank Atlantic) and Executive Director, Gerry Baron presented the awards recently at a meeting of the Palm Beach County School District’s Athletic Directors. Schools receiving awards were William T. Dwyer High School, Palm Beach Central High School and Cardinal Newman High School.
William T. Dwyer Athletic Director Thomas Pagley accepted two (2) awards, each in the amount of $1,000 for player Matt Elam, who was named High School Player of the Year, and for Jack Daniels who was named High School Coach of the Year.
$500 checks were presented to Palm Beach Central High School Athletic Director Jeff Schwartz for kicker Patrick O’Donnell who tied with Cardinal Newman High School Kicker, Brendan Gibbons for the 2008 Place-Kicker of the Year. Accepting the award for Cardinal Newman was Athletic Director Alan Botkin.
The awards were sponsored by Dr. Myles Runsdorf of Play Like A Pro and a local charitable organization.
