Palm Beach Challenge College Baseball Event Kicks of Friday

February 26, 2009

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission is pleased to support and welcome back to Palm Beach County, the Sixth Annual Palm Beach Challenge College Baseball event, presented by Doubletree Guest Suites, Boca Raton.

The Palm Beach Challenge began five years ago as spring competition for junior college teams, but has since become a popular draw for the bigger college programs. NCAA Division 1, Division II and Junior College teams will compete this year.

Last year’s event brought in over $1.6 million in economic impact to Palm Beach County, and event organizers are expecting this year’s event to bring approximately $1.9 million in economic impact and utilize approximately 2,800 room nights.

The event starts Friday night, February 26 with the Villanova Wildcats of the Big East taking on the Indiana State Sycamores of the Missouri Valley Conference at Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, FL. This will be the first of over 120 games that will be played at the Complex. Overall, there will be 60 teams competing from 15 different states and Canada. Among the notable Division I teams are nationally ranked Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and Penn State. Up to 17 games per day will be played every day from February 27th-March 23rd. Admission is $5, and is good for the entire day and evening of games.

Last year, 41 Challenge participants were drafted by Major League Baseball in the annual first year player draft. One notable participant this year, James Jones from Long Island University, is projected by many scouts to be a first round pick. The 6'2" left-hander has a mid-nineties fastball. His first anticipated game in the Palm Beach Challenge is Friday, March 13th vs. Southern Illinois University -Edwardsville at 1:00 PM.
