The Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes that by bringing a variety of sports events to Palm Beach County to promote a positive economic impact to area hotels and sports facilities, a dual purpose is being served. These events open a new realm of sports experience for the citizens of Palm Beach County, especially its young people. Many events give kids a chance to actually view sports which they may have otherwise only been exposed to through TV or magazines. These events also offer a great chance for sports clinics and motivational talks from visiting sports participants.

In 1993, the Sports Commission's Youth Committee, made up of dedicated Sports Commission volunteers and board members, established a mission statement to formalize some of the Commission's youth activities. Assisted by the local corporate community, sports specialists and professional athletes, the Unified Youth Sports Program and Sports and Fitness Festival was developed to allow Palm Beach County youth opportunities to explore the positive aspects of sports participation.

Through the years these activities have evolved into several programs which focus on its mission. "Just Say Yes To Sports" is the operative slogan for all of the youth sports activities and its official mascot, Sporty, a perky flame with attitiude, has been depicted in many of the featured sports activities. The Institute's activities have reached more than 50,000 youth through various events.

The youth programs have become one of the Sports Commission's most valued assets. They have been recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as well as other national sports organizations. They also continue to be one of our strongest partners in bringing events to Palm Beach County. Because of their grassroots elements, they allow sports organizations to provide a legacy to our youth.

The Institute is now made up of several ongoing programs which foster grassroots level sports development and promote the positive impact of sports on the young people of Palm Beach County. These programs include the Unified Youth Sports Program, the Sports and Fitness Festival, and the Sports Achievement Awards. In addition, the Institute participates in and supports activities sponsored by national organizations which promote and share its philosophy.
