USA Baseball 16 & Under Championships Swings into Palm Beach County

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The USA Baseball 16 & Under Championships will take place in Palm Beach County for the 10th consecutive year.  Games begin this weekend, on Saturday, June 19 and run through Saturday, June 26.   The tournament will be held at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana and Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.  This event is considered the most prestigious baseball tournament in the nation for the 15 and 16 year old age group.   Seventy-two teams from across the country and approximately 1,200 athletes will descend upon Palm Beach County for the week long tournament and compete in an astounding 264 games.  The first round of games will start at 8am each morning and the final round of games will begin at 8pm.

USA Baseball uses this tournament as an exclusive selection vehicle for its Youth National Team Trials. Approximately 20 players will be recruited from the event and flown to Cary, NC, USA Baseball’s headquarters, where they join another 20 players from the West Championships held in Arizona.  After an intensive camp, 18 players will be selected to represent the United States and its Youth National Team, which will compete internationally.  The United States has proven to be the country to beat on the global baseball scene since USA Baseball began selecting and training players in the 16U age category in the summer of 1997. The program has medaled each time it has taken the field in such international events as the IBAF "AA"/16U World Youth Championships and the COPABE "AA"/16U Pan American Championships. In 2009, the 16U National Team knocked off the world's best teams en route to a gold medal at the IBAF Worlds.

Since 1978, USA Baseball has been the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of baseball.  The organization governs more than 12 million amateur players in ballparks and playgrounds across the country.  USA Baseball is a resource center for the sport of baseball and is responsible for promoting and developing the game of baseball on the grassroots level, both nationally and internationally.

The USA Baseball 16 & Under Championships generates a tremendous amount of spending and revenues for Palm Beach County.  The event is estimated to generate approximately 4,000 room nights for Palm Beach County hotels and nearly $2 million in economic impact.    The event is a significant contributor to sports business impacting the tourism industry, and promoting Palm Beach County as the premier youth baseball destination in the United States.
