During the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 7, the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed May as Physical Fitness and Sports Month, recognizing the importance of physical activity and the economic and youth development benefits of sports. This decision aligns with a national initiative promoting the importance of regular physical activity for health and well-being and is consistent with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition’s annual recognition of the month since 1983.
“It is an honor to serve the sports tourism industry for the Palm Beaches. Our number one partner is Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation,” said George Linley, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “They are the largest provider of venues for sports on a regional, national, and global level, and we could not be successful without the friendship that we have with Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation. We were recognized as a top five sports destination in the United States…the State of Florida was recognized as the largest provider of economic impact through sports tourism, and there’s no doubt that this county is a big reason why the state is number one. And this is not possible without the Board of County Commissioners, without our County Administrator for years who’ve provided a great deal of support to our Sports Commission and a great, great deal of support to the sports landscape.”
“The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department is proud to be part of a community that values health, well-being, and economic vitality through physical activity and sports,” said Jennifer Cirillo, director of Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation. “Our commitment to providing a wide variety of accessible parks and facilities supports the initiative to promote regular physical activity for everyone while also driving the sports economy. Our partnership with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission has resulted in our County being one of the top sports destinations in the country. We are dedicated to ensuring all residents and visitors have opportunities to participate in fitness and sports activities, helping to create a healthier, happier community.”
